Cue the winter blues! SAD and CBD

The SAD season is well and truly upon us. The days are getting shorter, nights colder and the sky just that touch too grey to keep the spirits alive with any true ease. Seasonal Affective Disorder ushers itself in at the beginning of the change in weather and lasts until the summer months bring more sunlight. The reduced amount of light during the day means our circadian rhythm becomes all messed up and leaves our body out of balance, a little confused and craving those extra daylight hours. Hormone levels, energy levels and sleep are all hugely affected by this change in weather, and while some people suffer with minor symptoms, they can also be pretty severe and range from low energy, appetite changes and a loss of concentration to a lack of interest in everyday activities and feelings of hopelessness. It can be rough. Particularly now that SAD sufferers are also met with an ongoing pandemic and sporadic lockdowns leaving us all stuck indoors and unable to socialise or hit the gym. If you’ve noticed one or any of these symptoms during the last couple of months, you’re not alone. It’s thought that one in three people in the UK suffer with Seasonal Affective Disorder.

However, CBD oil could be a good, natural choice in tackling the seasons and lifting your spirits. Seeing as CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system and it’s this very system which is responsible for things like appetite, immune system responses, sleep and sensitivity, introducing CBD into your winter routine is a sensible idea. And the good thing about CBD oils that contain no THC like ours, is that you don’t run the risk of heightening levels of anxiety which THC can sometimes do.

The change in season and sunlight seriously depletes our serotonin and we need serotonin in order to get a good night’s sleep and regulate our moods. Without it, we can become anxious, depressed and stressed. CBD is said to improve levels of stress and anxiety by binding to a receptor called 5-HT1A which doesn’t get a lot of action otherwise, during these dark, slow months. Start your morning with a few drops of Hail Mary CBD oil in your morning coffee to push away those nasty feelings of dread and kick start the day on a positive note.

The reason we tend to have bad sleeping patterns during the winter is that melatonin plays a big part in regulating our sleep cycle, and with reduced daylight hours, we’re just not getting enough of it. Low amounts of sun exposure push our melatonin production out of balance and a body and mind out of balance is the last thing we need. Studies have shown that CBD boosts our internal cannabinoid receptors to produce more melatonin and improve the stability of our sleep. Make it part of your skincare routine to rub Hail Mary CBD Balm into your temples just before going to bed or include a few drops of oil into your night-time herbal tea to reduce the cortisol (the ‘stress’ hormone) running through your body from the day’s activity. For the vapers out there, one last puff of Hail Mary’s OG Kush E-liquid before hitting the pillow could do wonders for your sleep.

We all feel more sluggish during the winter months and that’s because, like most animals, our bodies are preparing for hibernation. However, in our modern society, we’re expected to have the same amount of energy and performance levels as the peppy summer months which can sometimes feel completely impossible. Instead of beating yourself up about it, incorporate some things into your daily routine which get your adrenalin pumping and your body moving. Whether it’s yoga, a quick morning walk or a lunchtime workout, follow it up with a few drops of Hail Mary 300mg oil in your morning smoothie or protein shake to combat your body sinking into slow mode.

*Before using CBD in any combination to treat SAD, we suggest discussing this with your doctor first to make sure it won’t interact or interfere with any other medication you’re taking.
